Herman/Heerman Family
Reference to the Herman
family members, in the original Indian River Colony, living just south of Doctor
Holbrook are not clear. One author notes that living there was
Philip Herman , a German scientist and lover of plants arrived with his son
Philip after a German Revolution and settled south of Ankona Bluff. Called "Old Phil" and
"Young Phil" they were said to be about 20 years different in
age. The two were otherwise so much alike they behaved as twins.
There is a Philip Herman listed in the 1850 Census age 25, born in New York, and
who works as a laborer.
Another author names John L. Herman, who may have arrived after the colony had
broken up and re-organized. John is listed in the 1850 census, as
Judge of Probate and in the 1860 Census as a 70 year old fruit grower. Ives map from 1856 show the Herman place, going south
from Fort Pierce, as being located between the Holdrin and Morrison places.
