MONDAY MARKED THE FOUR-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRAQ WAR
Florida's Republicans in Congress continue to ignore the American people and refuse to hold President Bush accountable for his permanent commitment to a failed strategy. In the last four years, 130 soldiers from Florida have died in Iraq while many more have been wounded. [http://icasualties.org/oif/Statecity.aspx]
Our brave men and women in uniform have now been in Iraq for four years, longer than our nation's participation in World War II, World War I, the Korean War, or the Civil War. Everyday, they put their lives on the line, serving admirably and courageously in defense of our freedoms. Somehow, Florida Republicans like U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez and U.S. Reps. Dave Weldon and Bill Young continue to ignore the will of the people-a people who demanded a new direction in November.

HOUSE CALLS HEARING ON NEWS THAT FL-13 VOTING MACHINES HAD AN "ISSUE" BEFORE ELECTION
House Administration committee Chairwoman Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald, a Democrat of California, has requested a hearing into the still unresolved Congressional District 13 election in Sarasota County. In an August 15th memo to Republican Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent, Election Systems & Software recommended posting warnings about an "issue" the machines were having, while promising to fix them before the November 7th election. Unfortunately, neither of these things happened, and the election is surrounded by uncertainty. Read more here.
FLORIDA REPUBLICANS VOTE AGAINST HURRICANE RECOVERY
Florida Republican Representatives Bill Young, Ander Crenshaw and Dave Weldon voted with their party against legislation that will help cut the bureaucratic red-tape and speed up funding assistance to areas hit by Hurricanes Dennis and Wilma. Many areas cannot receive federal funding because of their inability to produce matching funds. Read more here.
COUNCILMAN LUIS LOPEZ OF PASCO JOINS DEMOCRATIC PARTY!
"Even though I spent 20 years in the military and I was a die-hard Republican, I felt let down," Lopez said. As a dedicated public servant and Zephyrhills' first Hispanic politician, we welcome Lopez into the Democratic Party and look forward to working with him towards a better Florida. Read more here.
YOUR VOICE HAS BEEN HEARD: THANK YOU FOR THE INCREDIBLE RESPONSE TO REPRESENTATIVE YOUNG'S FAILURE TO OUR TROOPS!
The response to last week's email was astonishing, as hundreds of letters-to-the-editor have been written in condemnation of Rep. Young's failure to properly handle the Walter Reed Hospital scandal. Though many people have participated, we can do more! There is still time to make your voice heard. Please go to www.fladems.com/young to do your part!
MAHONEY CREATES VETERANS ADVISORY COUNCIL
Congressman Tim Mahoney (FL-16) announced yesterday the creation of a new Veterans Advisory Council. The Veterans Advisory Council will provide a direct line of communication between Congressman Mahoney and veterans throughout his district. The council is comprised of veterans from all eight counties in the 16th District and includes Floridians who served in WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
The council will provide a venue through which veterans can provide insight and advice on issues facing the veterans' community. In addition, Congressman Mahoney will provide regular legislative updates from Congress.
