Congressman Tim Mahoney's Statement on Iraq Supplemental

May 25, 2007
(Washington, DC)
Congressman Tim Mahoney (FL-16) today issued the following statement on the Iraq War Supplemental that the House passed yesterday:

"While the President chose to gamble with the wellbeing of our men and women in uniform by vetoing our previous attempts to get our troops the resources they need and hold the Iraqis accountable, my colleagues and I have consistently fought to fully fund our troops and change direction in Iraq.

"Congress sent the President a bill that provided even more money than he asked for to support our troops and refocus America on fighting the War on Terror. The President vetoed that bill and in doing so denied critical funding to our troops and sent a dangerous message to our enemies.

"I am not willing to play politics when our troops' lives are on the line. The Iraq supplemental we passed gets our troops the resources they need and holds the Iraqi government accountable for their own security. It also requires that the President report to Congress in July and September on the progress in meeting these benchmarks. I will continue to fight to hold the President accountable for his Iraq War policy. If these benchmarks are not met and the security situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate, the President will not be allowed to continue the same tactics come September," said Congressman Tim Mahoney.
