Democrat of the Month - March 2005

Phil Attey
Internet Political Strategist & Democratic Activist

Phil Attey at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC
Join the new Democratic Executive Committee in thanking Phil Attey for his service to the Democratic Parties of Martin and St. Lucie Counties! Over the past year, Phil has provided us with his skills, his time, and his endless optimism and enthusiasm.

Phil Attey is best known in Washington, DC as one of the pioneers in grassroots mobilization over the Internet. In 1996, while working for the Human Rights Campaign, Attey put the organization online and developed the first comprehensive Congressional Action Center on the Internet, allowing supporters to find out where their Members of Congress stood on target legislation, and easily send to them a free constituent email.

Attey left the Human Rights Campaign to start the Communications and Policy Technology Network, a national professional association for Internet political strategists. Phil has volunteered his services to many national efforts, heading up Internet campaigns for the TransAfrica Forum, The National Environmental Trust, and the Young Democratic Candidates Action Network; as well as national responses to the murder of Matthew Shepherd and the disappearance of Washington Intern Chandra Levy.

Phil first became excited about civil service here in Martin County. In 1982 he was student body president of Martin County High School. During High School he was chosen by the American Legion to represent our county at Florida Boy's State, and was selected by the Elk's Club for two years in a row as Martin County's "Teen of the Year". Phil is a graduate of the University of Florida where he was President of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, and tapped into the Florida Blue Key Leadership Honorary.

A year ago Phil returned to Martin County and decided to stay in Florida to help locally with the Presidential Election. He first became active in Martin County, and then was hired by the Kerry/Edwards Campaign to work in St. Lucie County, where Kerry defeated President Bush 52-48.

Phil now plans to return to Washington, DC, and hopes to be a part of Chairman Dean's efforts to rebuild our party, and harness the power of the Internet as he did in his 2004 Democratic primary campaign. We, again, thank Phil for his contributions and wish him all the best in his hopes to serve our Party on the national level.
