Judge Orders Senator to Testify in Libel Suit Against Consultant

Ken Pruitt

PUNTA GORDA - Incoming Senate President Ken Pruitt Thursday lost his bid to avoid testifying under oath in a lawsuit against his West Palm Beach political-consultant ally, as a judge ruled that he will have to provide a deposition in the case.

Both Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie, and the consultant, Randy Nielsen, had filed papers hoping to prohibit a lawyer for state Rep. Paige Kreegel, R-Punta Gorda, from questioning Pruitt. They argued that the deposition was designed to embarrass Pruitt and hurt him politically, rather than to obtain relevant information for the libel suit based on a series of attack ads Nielsen produced against Kreegel in his 2004 campaign.
