Martin County Democratic Party To Help Hurricane Katrina Victims
The Democratic Party of Martin County will help raise money and supplies for Hurricane Katrina victims at events in September through the end of the year.
Collection of relief goods will take place at the Sept. 7 Democratic Club meeting and at the Sept. 17 meeting of the Democratic Women's Club. A benefit auction of donated items will be held Sept. 23, in conjunction with an already scheduled benefit for the local Democratic Party.
"We want to do whatever we can to help the people suffering from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina," says Martin County Democratic Party chairman Dave Dew.
The Martin County Democratic Club will solicit and collect relief goods including food, clothing and bedding in new condition at its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Blake Library. Goods will be stored and delivered to relief agencies, says Louise Cunha, club president.
Similar items will be solicited and collected at the Tea With Eleanor Roosevelt" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Stuart Women's Club. "We will gather together everything we can for those people who are so desperately in need," says club president Cynthia Crankshaw. "We hope to deliver an entire truckload of items such as medical supplies, diapers and canned goods."
Items of value may be donated for auction at the Democratic Party benefit, Night at Kristy's, at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23, at the Ramada Inn in Stuart. "We will be auctioning a number of items donated by former Treasury Secretary G. William Miller, for the benefit of the local Democratic Party," says event organizer Valerie Jones.
"We will piggyback an auction of items of value donated by local Democrats and others for the benefit of hurricane victims, and donate those funds to the charity of the buyer's choice," says Jones. "We hope people will search those attics for collectibles, art work and items to donate, then come to the auction and bid high." Local auctioneer Elliott Paul has volunteered his services for the benefit.
People wishing to donate items can contact Louise Cunha at 286-1281, Cynthia Crankshaw at 286-4399 or Valerie Jones at 834-6167.
