Hundreds Turn out to Protest Governor Scott
STUART — On Saturday, March 5th, the Palm Beach/Treasure Coast CLC showed its solidarity by coming together to rally and picket Florida Governor Rick Scott's appearance at a GOP $5,000 a plate fundraiser while planning a massive $3.3 billion cut to public education.
While about 500 union activist teachers, paraprofessionals, communications and electrical workers, ironworkers and allied tradesmen, firefighters, postal workers, and others stood out on the street in front of the Indian River Plantation Marriott, about 300 GOP loyalists including Rep. Gayle Harrell and Rep. William Snyder watched and took their pictures on the balcony. The entire scene gave new meaning to Marie Antoinnette's quip, "They have no bread? Let them eat cake!"
The union members were joined in the picket by retired members of UAW, Teamsters, and parents and other community members who care about education. Picketers came from as far west as Pasco County and as far south as Broward County to bring their message to Scott personally, "Save Our Schools" and also included current elected officials St. Lucie School Board members Kathryn Hensley and Carol Hilson, and former St. Lucie County Commissioner Charles Grande.
